Color Samples for Interior Painting

The very first step in considering some color changes in your home is to create color samples. Adding new colors to your interior space is a bit of a commitment, so it is important to allow for some decision making time. Color is a subjective thing, and it is easy to go wrong.

Color samples are easy to create.

If you aren’t confident in your own color selection abilities (most people aren’t!), it is best to work with a color consultant, interior designer, or even a good paint company can assist you.

Once you get an idea of the color range you would like to be in, do some sampling. The little color chips and fan decks at the paint store are not enough.

To make an informed decision, you need a larger scale representation of what the colors will look like in your home, and the best way to do this is through proper color samples.

How to Create Simple Color Samples

Avoid putting paint directly on the walls of your home for sampling. It is best to buy some drywall (you can often find 2’x2′ scraps at home stores) and paint them up. Be sure to paint the samples exactly as a wall would be painted, for the best representation.

Use a paint roller to make samples, as that is the texture your walls will have.

On the raw drywall samples, use primer, and then apply two coats of the colors you are curious about. One color per sample board. Apply with a roller, so that the samples look just like a real wall.

When you have your sample group together, put them in the rooms you are considering color changes in, and observe them in both natural and artificial light – daytime and nighttime.

Move them around the room and even prop them up higher than floor level to get a true representation of what the colors will look like.

Study them for a week or so before proceeding to the paint project stage. For more tips on paint products and processes, visit our Topcoat Review site.
